The general goal of HANSEL is to estimate how HA from dam operation and land-use changes compromises the functioning of river systems in south-central Chile in order to make recommendations for water managers and policy development.

The specific goals are defined as:

  1. Development of a virtual watershed platform including a theoretical river network.
  2. Prediction of the natural flow regimes of the whole river network, including ungauged rivers.
  3. Implementation and testing of a methodology to assess the HAcaused by dam operation and land-use changes and identification of the main spatial patterns of HA.
  4. Improvement of our understanding of how the flow regime and its alteration control river system functioning in order to make recommendations for water managers and policy development.
